What It Means to Dwell Under the Shelter of the Most High (Psalm 91)

What Does It Mean to Dwell?
There are seasons when life feels uncertain—when things don’t move the way we hoped, or when we find ourselves carrying more than we thought we could.
Psalm 91 speaks into those places with a quiet but steady promise:
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
But what does it really mean to dwell there? Not visit… not pass through… but dwell.
God’s Presence in Quiet Seasons
To dwell is to remain.
To stay.
To abide.
It is not a momentary turning toward God in crisis, but a posture of staying close—even when nothing feels urgent. Even when nothing feels resolved.
The shelter of the Most High is not simply protection from difficulty. It is His presence within it. A nearness that does not shift with circumstances.
There are seasons that feel hidden. Quiet. Even still. Times where it may seem like nothing is happening, or like we are waiting longer than we expected.
But those places are not empty.
They are often the very places where God is working most deeply—forming trust, shaping faith, and drawing us closer to Himself.
To dwell under His shelter is to trust that even here, He is present.
Not distant. Not watching from afar. But near.
A Reflection in My Work
This is the place from which my painting God’s Always There was created.
It came out of a season where I needed to be reminded that God’s presence does not leave—even when life feels uncertain or stretched.
The image of the dove in the painting reflects that quiet, abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. A reminder that we are never outside of His covering.
When Faith Looks Like Staying
We often think of faith as something strong and unwavering.
But sometimes, faith looks like staying. Remaining.
Choosing to trust, even when we don’t fully understand what God is doing.
To dwell under the shelter of the Most High is not about having everything figured out.
It is about knowing where you are held.
A Final Encouragement
If you find yourself in a quiet or uncertain season, take heart.
God is not absent in the waiting.
He is present in it.
And even here—
you are under His shelter.
We often think of faith as something strong and unwavering.
But sometimes, faith looks like staying.
Remaining.
Choosing to trust, even when we don’t fully understand what God is doing.
To dwell under the shelter of the Most High is not about having everything figured out.
It is about knowing where you are held.
